If it’s up to Patrick and Daisy, the Vegan Food Tour Utrecht is just the beginning of their vegan entrepreneurship in Utrecht. In the first months after setting up their Vegan Food Tour, one thing quickly becomes clear: Utrecht is ready for more vegan options and vegan residents!
Many Utrechters and non-Utrechters get to know the animal-friendly secrets the city was hiding from them. In addition, some are hearing about the rapidly growing markets of vegan alternatives to meat and dairy for the first time. From vegan KitKat to the Beyond Burger. And from Oatly Oat Milk to vegan Baileys.
The entrepreneurs with whom Patrick and Daisy work together recognize what the guides are experiencing. Utrecht wants more plant-based food. No animal suffering, less negative environmental impact, and healthier alternatives.
The numbers of vega and vegan restaurants are growing rapidly. Yet they are still a minority. And more importantly: other restaurants offer limited or few creative vegan options. Time for action!
The realization that this is a project they cannot carry alone soon dawns on the ambitious couple. They contact the vegan student organization VSA, stay in close contact with collaborating restaurants, and fantasize about larger collaboration policies.
Daisy and Patrick can’t do this alone. They want a healthier, more liveable, animal-friendly Utrecht. Together with the municipality, with students and with inhabitants from all walks of life, we are going to work on that. Together we have many more ideas. Together we will succeed in working them out. Together in Utrecht.
Yet inspiration does not stop at the borders of the Domstad. No, we make Utrecht a place where everyone wants to be. From a family from Woerden who are interested in a plant-based diet. To vegans from Dublin who visit Utrecht during their weekend in Amsterdam, because it is the vegan hotspot of Europe. That’s what we’re here for.
Residents from Utrecht and the surrounding area will have the opportunity to learn about, eat from and live with the most delicious vegan dishes that exist in the world. Tourists will visit Utrecht en masse because we are one step further than Berlin, London or Paris. Utrecht, that’s where you need to be. The impact will be local. The appeal will be international.
The most vegan restaurants in Europe per thousand inhabitants, vegan Fridays, the fattest and most inspiring vegan food festival in the country, vegan food tours that walk and bike each other upside down, and tourists who come not to Amsterdam but to Utrecht because we are the Vegan Capital of Europe. It seems like an unachievable ideal. These are some of our dots on a green horizon.
It’s time for Utrecht to live up to its green image. It’s time to go one step further. The city is going to be the vegan city. We are going to veganize Utrecht. We are going to veganize YOU. And it will happen faster than you think. #VU2030.
